ISVS-3, the third International Seminar on Vernacular Settlments was held from 2nd-4th March 2006 at Surabaya, Indonesia, on the theme ‘Rethinking Local Knowledge in Vernacular Settlements, Anchoring the concept of Place in the Post-disaster and Post-global world’. Although it had then been decided to take the ISVS out of Indonesia to an international venue, tsunami struck and it was felt that the devastation suffered by the vernacular settlements in Indonesia itself needed focused attention. Thus, the seminar was held in Indonesia again.
